As a wedding photographer, I get asked a lot about doing a “first look” as part of your wedding day. Should we or should we not do one?. What are the benefits? How do we incorporate one etc… If a couple is on the fence my recommendation is to DO the first look. After many weddings, I find the benefits outweigh the negatives. If you have decided that a first look IS for you, check out these tips to make your first look be the most memorable it can be.
1.Embrace the Moment
The first look is a special and intimate moment for the two of you. Take a deep breath, embrace the emotions, and fully immerse yourselves in the experience. Allow yourselves to be present and enjoy the anticipation and excitement of seeing each other for the first time on your wedding day. Wedding day can be chaotic and sadly, what gets lost most often in meeting your timeline goals and logistics is savoring the intimacy and intimate moments of the day..
2. Take your Time
Plan this moment with your photographer - and leave time in your timeline for your first look. When you see each other, take your time to truly appreciate one another. Pause and savor the moment, soak in each other's presence, and let the significance of the day sink in. This is a beautiful opportunity to have a private moment before the whirlwind of the wedding day begins.

3..Be Yourselves
Remember that this moment is about the genuine connection between the two of you. Be true to yourselves and let your emotions show. Laugh, cry, smile, or simply take in the moment together. Don't worry about how you "should" react; just let your love and happiness shine through. I’ve seen the tears, the trembling and the raw emotions and I will promise you that the one thing that is always true? It melts away a lot of nerves because in this moment the only expectations you need to meet… are each others!
4. Express Your Feelings
Don’t be afraid to share any emotions with each other during the first look. You can whisper sweet words, express your love, or simply take a moment to express how excited you are to be marrying each other - that this day has finally come!. These words will create an intimate atmosphere and make the moment even more meaningful.
5. Stay Present
It's easy to get caught up in the nerves or excitement of the day, but try to stay present during the first look. Take a moment to truly see and appreciate each other. Pay attention to the details—the way your partner looks at you, the way they smile—and create lasting memories together.
6. Enjoy the Experience
Remember to enjoy the entire experience of the first look. This is one of those “once-in-a-lifetime” moments - don’t rush it! It's meant to be cherished. Let go of any stress or worries, and focus on the love and joy that brought you both together. Embrace the happiness of the day and celebrate your love for each other.
