Your child has finished 12 years of school. You should be proud as it is a huge accomplishment. It is a time to celebrate. It will probably be their last time being professionally photographed before their wedding. Think about it...every year you get a photo taken for the yearbook, but what about after your child graduates? Senior photos are the last opportunity to capture their personality before their adult years begin!! Do you want these photos to be a boring headshot against a plain background? Or do you want them to be artfully executed and showcase their personality?!!!
1. Celebrate your senior's accomplishment!
They have worked hard and deserve to celebrate. Maybe you had a bumpy road, maybe your child battled an illness or maybe it was easy and seeing them cross the finish line is a huge achievement. You will wonder where the time went. You will laugh, you will cry, and before it is over you will congratulate your spouse on a job well done that you accomplished as parents!
2. It is a way to capture this special moment in time.
As a parent, I vividly remember the first preschool picture of my kids. You can totally see their personality through that single picture. That picture captured them exactly as they were at that moment. Then, as they progressed through school all the images are the same. The same colored backdrop, standard pose...the uniqueness gets lost. Their senior portraits are meant to capture your child's personality in this milestone year - just like that preschool picture. I work hard to reflect their personality through wardrobe, expressions, location and interests.
3. Showcase their interests.
Your child has expressed their individuality by trying different extracurricular activities and hobbies - all things that helped them to become who they are. A senior session is the best place to showcase this. Perhaps they are into sports or love to read? Perhaps they are into art, play instruments or into gaming? You can even showcase a favorite pet! Whatever their passion, be sure to capture those interests and accomplishments.
4. Practical reasons.
Now that you have your perfect pictures, what can you do to feature them? Creating a piece of wall art, a custom album, or simply prints are all perfect ways to help remember this milestone year. All options make unique gifts for family and friends. Senior pictures are also a great way to customize graduation announcements. it is a personalized way to show family, friends, and everyone else what an incredible person your child has grown into.
While senior portraits my seem frivolous or extravagant, senior year is a transition between childhood and adulthood. It is important to celebrate this time and reward their hard work and have something to reflect on when they have left for college. Senior portraits can freeze this moment in time and let you reflect on where they have been and where they are going. This is a time to savor both parental and teen accomplishments!! You did it!!
