There are so many decisions to make when planning your senior portrait session and one of the biggest questions I get is, "What locations should I choose?" This is a hard one to answer because it is very subjective. There are many factors into choosing where your senior photos should be taken and it is all about you and your interests. However I do have a few tips to help you pick and I'll share a few of my favorite locations.
1. First and foremost what do you want your photos to say about you?
Are you artistic, do you play sports, are you outdoorsy, a free spirit, a fashionista, a band geek, a big reader, a city girl or a nature lover?
Take time to make a note of all of your interests and how you want your photos to represent you. This will help to get a clear picture of locations that best represent your personality.
2 What feeling do you want your Seattle senior pictures to have?
Do you want a light and airy feeling or would you like a more moody feeling? Some of this depends on the time of year and lighting but it can also be influenced by your surroundings. If you would like a light and airy sunny day, how about a senior photo session in a wild flower field? If you are more of a glamor, moody person you may opt for a late afternoon time in an urban setting.
3. Choose a Seattle location that has sentimental meaning.
Does your family own special property that you want to make part of your story? Do you love to read and spend a lot of time at the bookstore or library? Did you spend a lot of your high school years riding horses? You may want to include the barn and your horse into the session. If the location has meaning to you, it makes for a great place to have senior pictures taken.
4. Clothing Choices May Dictate the Options for Your Seattle Senior Picture location.
Clothing is an important part of your session. What you pick to wear can also influence your location. Not that it is unheard of, but it could be strange to wear your football gear for pictures in an open field. However, a nice suit and tie could work in both an open field or urban location but look strange on the football field. Similarly, a beautiful gown could be amazing in an urban setting as well as by an ocean beach.
5. Think outside the Box
Don't discount any location. Even the most unusual place can make amazing photos. For example some light rail stations have cool artwork that can make great backdrops. Hotel lobbies can make a good alternative when is is raining in Seattle. Use your imagination the options are endless!
6. What Time of the year Do You Want Your Senior Pictures to Reflect?
Most senior portraits are taken the summer before you start senior year. However, that is not a hard and fast rule. If you love the look of fall colors you will want to wait well into October to have your session, or have them shot during the school year. Maybe you are a snow skier and want your session up at the mountain. You will absolutely have to wait till the winter. Most high schools have a set date to turn in your picture to them for the yearbook, if that time is before when you want your full session ask your photographer if they would be willing to take just a yearbook photo and do your full session later.
7. Check Pinterest for the best senior picture ideas.
Look and see what others are doing by searching through Pinterest or Googling to give you great ideas for locations and outfits.
