Hiring the right team is so important when it comes to putting together your dream wedding, but it can also be pretty stressful.
How do you find the right match for you when it comes to selecting a photographer? How do you know who to trust? Where do you go for advice?
First of all, this is not an easy task and it’s totally normal if you feel overwhelmed, frustrated or confused. It’s not like you plan a wedding every day! This is all probably new to you, so be patient and consider a few key things.
Let’s start with the first question: How do you pick the photographer(Wedding Vendor) who’s right for YOU?
In my experience, STYLE, PERSONALITY, and PROFESSIONALISM are the biggest things to look for:
Your photographer should reflect the style and the vision that you have in mind for your wedding. You’ll also want to go with a photographer who you and your guests will feel comfortable with - because the more comfortable your guests are, the more FUN they will have and the more natural your photos will feel.
There’s a lot riding on this day, so you’ll need a photographer with the experience level to not just provide the base level, but know what you don’t know in that area and guide you. So, how do you figure that out? Here are eight must-ask questions for your potential photographer - and really, ALL your potential wedding professionals before booking:
1. How long have you been a photographer(wedding profesional)?
Ideally, your wedding pro should have lots of experience specifically with weddings. Not only does this make them more skilled in their craft, but this also makes them a valuable source of information. It ensures that your wedding day goes smoothly.
2. How do you prepare for each wedding?
Experienced photographers(wedding professionals) spend time with each of their clients and get to know their wedding needs and expectations. This is critical. It is this shared understanding that ensures your style is captured, that key shots (like first-look photos) and wedding party portraits are not missed. It also ensures that the proper resources (time, a second photographer etc.) are provisioned if needed. Usually, a pro will conduct an in-person interview, have checklists for you to fill out, or some combination of both.
3.How much is the deposit?
This question is pretty straight forward. Deposit amounts will vary based on the cost of the service, but you can expect to pay between 20-50% of the total cost to hold your wedding date.
4. How much is the deposit, and when is it and the balance due?
This question is pretty straightforward. The deposit amounts vary wildly depending on the overall cost of the services you’re purchasing.
5. What specifically is included in that cost?
Packages often vary, so it’s likely that you won’t be able to compare one vendor exactly to the next without doing a little figuring. Keep in mind that the lowest cost doesn't necessarily equate to the best deal; some higher quotes include services that you have to pay extra for in other packages. Make sure you take this into account.
6. What happens if I cancel or have to reschedule? What happens if you cancel?
Find out if your deposit is refundable under any conditions, or what happens if local health requirements force you to reschedule your plans. Do they have a back-up plan if something happens to them, or if something out of either of your control happens? This is important, since you might be stuck without the crucial services that you paid for if they do not have a plan in place.

9. How do I get the contract back to you?
If they answer with something like, “I don’t usually bother with contracts,” RUN! A contract is designed to protect both you and that wedding professional; don’t settle for a verbal agreement that won’t hold up in court.
10. Are there any additional fees beyond what’s quoted?
Taxes, service charges and travel fees can add up quickly. Make sure that you understand exactly what is included and if there are any other fees that you’ll have to pay. This should be clearly defined in your contract.
One final bit of advice: READ YOUR CONTRACT. Make sure you understand everything that’s written and ask questions if you don't. There IS no stupid question, except for the one you don't ask. Make sure you know the price as well as cancellation and refund policies.
Lastly, GO WITH YOUR GUT. If something feels "off" about the wedding pro, then you are probably right. Make sure you feel comfortable with him or her. (Hint: If you have not already done engagement photos, they are a great opportunity to see if your chosen pro is indeed a good fit!). Remember: These are just some basic starter questions to ask...if you have more specific ones, I’m always here to help answer them!
